International Lecture 2008

05 November 2008

Africa Works - with technology, good governance and a little help from our friends

Speaker: Dr Mo Ibrahim, founder of Celtel International and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation

Dr Ibrahim tells the story of Celtel International – both a successful African telecoms business and a global exemplar of good governance. The company was sold to MTC Kuwait in 2005 for US$3.4 billion, making it one of Africa’s most profitable commercial ventures. Dr Ibrahim then speaks about his Foundation, which he established using the proceeds of this sale to support and celebrate great African leadership. It awards the world’s largest monetary prize (US$5 million) to a departing African leader who has governed well and stood down peacefully.
