Vodafone Lecture: Social media and Arab Spring revolutions

05 July 2012

Speaker: Dr Tarek Elabbady, Senior Director, Microsoft Research Advanced Technology Labs

Chair: Professor Mike Walker OBE FREng

Technology played a key role in the Arab Spring revolutions. Microsoft Research Advanced Technology Labs in Cairo is an applied research group located in Egypt focusing on natural language technologies, mobile multimedia, and social mining technologies. Most of the relatively young researchers at the Advanced Technology Labs in Cairo were among the demonstrators in Tahrir Square during the Egyptian revolution, and the events reflected immediately upon their work.

The speaker, Dr Tarek Elabbady, showcases results from these projects in an attempt to offer a short survey of modern technology areas that found fresh applications during and after the Arab Spring revolutions.

Keywords: Social media, Arab spring, twitter, SMS, Facebook, blogs, Arabic, internet, blogosphere, Egypt, digital content, social media, mobile, user generated content, multimedia, data mining, Photosynth, pattern recognition, Microsoft Live Labs, mobile video stitching, SMS free voting, sentiment analysis, Maqalat, Maren
